Roy Germano is the director and producer of The Other Side of Immigration (an award-winning documentary film) and principal investigator of the Emigration & Politics Study (a scientific survey of over 700 Mexican households). He holds an M.A. in International Relations from the University of Chicago and is currently a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Government at the University of Texas at Austin (degree expected May 2010). Areas of expertise include international migration, the political economy of development, agricultural policy, Latin American politics (particularly Mexican politics), survey methodology, and statistics. He currently resides in Brooklyn, NY.
Germano’s dissertation, The Political Economy of Remittances: Emigration, Social Insurance Provision, and Political Behavior in Mexico, uses data from the Emigration & Politics Study to explore relationships between government spending, political behavior, and remittances--money sent home or “remitted” by international migrants. His doctoral research was supported by grants from the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (3 years; $120,000), the National Science Foundation Political Science Program, the Tinker Foundation, and the Department of Government, College of Liberal Arts, Office of Graduate Studies, and Center for Latin American Social Policy at the University of Texas at Austin.
Germano has written commentary for the San Antonio Express-News and given interviews to a number of live talk shows and publications like The Economist and FireDogLake.com. Germano’s film, The Other Side of Immigration, has screened at dozens of film festivals and universities and was recently named “most original presentation of a current political issue” at Politics on Film, a Washington D.C. festival sponsored by Tom Daschle’s and Bob Dole’s Bipartisan Policy Center.
